so, is the scale a perch type or a flat plate type? Willow and Toodles would not get up on a perch type scale. But the flat plate ( square, stainless steal) seemed hunky dory to them.
I set it so that it was right up to the edge of the table so that if the bird's tail could not fit on the plate it hung over and did not touch anything. They seemed OK with this. I started giving them a treat for stepping up on it and eventually, they got so they really did not mind it at all.

She IS a lovely bird. She also makes a lovely hair ornament!

You may want to keep a hand held perch handy so you can pick her up on that and keep her off your shoulder. With big, heavy birds, a bigger diameter stick is needed and sometimes that means it is too heavy for your hand and you wiggle and make the bird insecure. When I first got Toodles I had a big problem with that. I was able to use the hollow tube of the vacuum cleaner, wrapped in vet wrap ( try not to get an eye catching color). The diameter was right for her feet and the weight was so little that I really was only holding her weight out there. Also that is a very strong piece of equipment.

see i was thinking she might do better with a wooden perch but the one i tried so far (it was a perch from her cage even) she really was not comfortable with. i mean its only been a few days so far, i really don't expect much out of us yet :) in time she seems like she will be pretty trusting.

as for the scale it is a flat top. she might have no issue with it, but i want us to get used to each other before i try things that could freak her out. I love teh idea of putting it near the edge of the table... that will work well. i'll have to find another perch to try stick training her with too... i think that could be very helpful in the future!

Icky, was it you that said you have used the connector tube to the vacumn as a perch for fids....?? I remember somebody on here mentioned that it worked really well for them. I intend to make use of it with Max if he fears my arm too much.

Shares the title of naughtiest fid w/ Mrs. Beasly

i found this to be a useful way to gain trust in a older agressive bird.. 1st try to play on the ground with them. when a new bird is nervous the best way to gain trust is to save them (from the floor) let them walk around and walk overr pickem up then put them down.t his is also a grewat step up game.

maybe he/she is used to being taken to the couch when stepping. change the habbit of running up ur arm buy not allowing the time to do so..  tell her to step up then step off. this is a key control factor. my cocktiel tought my conure that it is fun to run away when asked to stepup. i broke this habbit by doing the carpet step up alot...

i always feel great after a shower.. any rescue that is eating after a week  or so i will bath, i swear they seem to act like a new birdson. lol

go to a kitchen supply  and look for a scale that reades in grams.. i got one from walmart for 20 bucks. i glued a homeade tee stand made out of 1/2 pvc rapped in vet rap..works great..

I would be lost without them.

huey's actually doing great. steps up with no issue when out of his cage he rides around on my shoulder when i'm in the house and plays on the play stand in front of the window. Very inquisitive... first thing he does when leaving his cage is climb down to the floor and start beaking everything he can.

he does not get along with the other fids so as soon as i can we are moving him out into the rest of the house in a bigger cage.

he is also molting like crazy... lots LOTS of flight and tail feathers and lots of down... only a couple contours so far. he's starting to look a bit thin in the chest and belly reagion but i'm pretty sure its just a heavy molt and not the beginning of plucking.

i just adore this bird :)
