Help me out please! My husband has come in contact with poison ivy, and I don't know if it's safe for him to have contact with our goffin cockatoo. I read that several birds actually eat the poison ivy berries, but I don't know which species of birds do this. I just don't want to take the chance of my bird getting sick because we were stupid enough not to protect him from his daddy's "rash".

Poison Ivy the plant and the sap is harmful to cockatoos. I would keep your husband away from the your Too until he has stopped with the weeping rash of poison ivy. Also contact a vet and see if they have anymore suggestions or information.

Only primates GET poison ivy...have an allergic reaction. But any animal can have the oils on their skin, fur or feathers and when touched by a person GIVE poison ivy.

OOOOO! I just read LH's post! I had never heard that about Toos. I think you should pay close attention to what she said.

Actually, the weeping does not spread the 'poison', it's just serum from the open blisters BUT the sap of the poison-ivy (it's not really an ivy) can remain on the skin (or clothing, dog hair and pretty much any surface it touches) for a long time if it's not washed out properly.  So, as long as Daddy has taken a good shower and washed thoroughly with soap the affected area, he can handle the bird and will not 'pass' it on to him.

I am not sure whether parrots have an allergic reaction to urushiol (the 'bad' thing in the sap), some wild birds eat the poison-ivy berries without any problem and there is a kind of parrot (Bahama Amazon) that feeds on poisonwood berries as part of their natural diet (poisonwood sap also has urushiol and the same effect on people as poison-ivy) so it is possible that they don't react to it BUT, having said that, I would never expose a bird to anything that might or might not cause such a reaction.  My motto is "Better safe than sorry".

And, please, tell you husband that I feel for him... I used to get the most awful reactions to poison-ivy, once I almost ended up in the hospital because somebody had told me that Clorox cured poison-ivy and I ended up with huge raw, bleeding wounds all over my legs (I know, I know, what kind of an idiot would put Clorox on open blisters?!  In my defense I'll say that it was a very, very long time ago when I was young and still believed everything I was told).

I was very young and got it everywhere, in my ears, my eyes, and raw open rash all over me..... I was rolling down a hill that was nothing but poison ivy. It was horrible. So I feel for your husband also.
