I'm sorry you lost your tiel. Are you getting a necropsy to find out what happened?

| I didn't get a necropsy done. The pet shop didn't require it so I didn't bother. The thing is I did take it to an avian vet that the pet store provided free of charge. They gave my Frankie a medication for a bacteria in her mouth but that was it. The pet store would only give me an in store credit but I didn't really want to get another tiel right away. However, I was missing hearing the chirps and sounds around the house so I got another one a couple days later. My brother has an African Grey and took him to another vet that is the vet for the aquarium around here so I will take my this tiel there because he did a more thorough job (I think). I am still having moments of a lot of sadness and crying...I have dogs and I never thought I would get attached to a bird about as much as I do to my dogs but I did. Filippo&Debz (5/16/2009) I'm sorry to hear about your faby. Thank you. She (or he, couldn't tell the sex) actually looked very similar to your lutino, which is what she was.

I am sorry to learn that your first bird died.
i hope you are keeping your new bird and your brother's bird as far from each other as you can, or better yet, not in the same building. 90 days of quarantine is important even with a vet visit. You said that the bacteria was "in the mouth" I am guessing that they meant in the birds crop and a swab of the mouth found it there as well. This can be something very serious and may be in other birds of the flock. So make sure you get this bird to an avian vet and tell them of the history of both birds. If this bird is also sick I would notify the store, the HQ of the store and the local humane society. There have been store chains that have had to stop selling tiels because they were getting them from a large national breeder that had sick birds.

ickybird (5/19/2009) I am sorry to learn that your first bird died. i hope you are keeping your new bird and your brother's bird as far from each other as you can, or better yet, not in the same building. Actually when I took it to the vet they just looked in her mouth and said it looked red and it might have been a bacterial thing. Gave me some stuff to put in her water and didn't seem too concerned about it. They also were able to identify the breeder of this bird from the ring on its leg and said that they felt the original breeder gave it to her friend to raise because all of the birds from the breeder that was on her leg were very sweet and my bird wasn't tamed so I don't think it was a national breeder. I purchased these two birds from the same chain but different stores. I'm making an appt today for the vet. My brother's bird stays in the basement where he lives so not near my bird.

We lost my cockatiel a few weeks ago in the same fashion. Baldwin was a sickly bird to begin with, so some signs of sickness for him were actually normal in his everyday life. What was not normal was us coming home and finding him unbalanced on the bottom of his cage when he was fine that morning. He stayed at the vet (we drove him there immediately) and died around 4:30 the next morning. I'm really sorry for your loss, I know how much it hurts. We fought for Baldwins life for 10 months and he just couldn't fight anymore.
