| This morning when I took the cover off of my cockatiel's cage he was on the floor of his cage. And now he is sleeping there and I don't think he has gotten up off of the cage floor yet today. I'm really worried. What should I look out for? Is a visit to the vet needed at this point?

If a bird does not appear bright eyed (eyes partially closed or are closed when the bird should be fully awake), vibrant, and sleek feathers (i.e. feathers ruffled), then you need to take the bird to an avian vet. If he's not feeling well then keep him extra warm and put food and water down low until he can be seen by an avian vet.

I think you should bring your tiel to the vet to get checked out. Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

| Hi everyone. Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately shortly after we took my Frankie to the vet he passed away. I've only had him for about 3 weeks and he was just starting to get really tame and walk on my shoulder just this week so I am heartbroken over it. He got progessively worse as the day went on. :(

I am so sorry, to hear about what happened to your tiel....so sorry. Did the vet say what might have caused his passing?

| Thank you both. The vet didn't seem to know what could have caused it. They said she was very pale and very thin. I guess she had been puffing her feathers up a bit but not noticable enough to me. The vet also said she was shivering when they tried to give her fluids. I'm just amazed at how she was acting fine the day before and then she got so sick. :(

I am so sorry for your loss. Birds most often hide their symptoms of illness, and unfortunately once they are sick enough that we notice, it can be too late. I know how attached you can become to your pet, and I wish you comfort from your loss. Maybe, there will be a new fid in your life within a month or two.

Well, I am sorry for your loss but don't feel bad, it takes a lot of experience and a very keen eye to catch the very subtle symptoms there are before they are obviously sick and, by then, it's usually too late. That's why it's essential to take every new bird to an AV for a complete physical as soon as we get it.
