| I have always tried to take very good care of my bird. He gets his yearly check ups and his polyomia vaccination. He did have a problem with some blood in his feeces but the vet could not find out the reaseon for that. It was just one time. The vet drew some blood to check out everything. The vet said that he was the healthest bird he'd seen according to the lad reprot. So last week I took him to be boarded because we went out of town for a couple of days. My vet always does a well check on the birds he boards before he puts tem with all of the other birds being boarded. This time they found a growth on his preen gland. I did notice that area being a bit more red than usual one day when he was cleaning himself. The vet said that we will have to keep an eye on it. Of course I am very worried. Is there anything else I should be doing, not doing? What would cause this growth? I guess they would have to take a biopsy of if to see if is cancer or not. Oh yeah, he (?) is a 11 year old cockatiel. I have his since he was 5 months old.

Can you discribe it? Toodles had an infected preen gland and then a cyst next to it. It had to be lanced and drained and then hot packs put on it both times. She is going back in Monday to see how it is.
Is it possible to get pictures?

| I have not actually seen it up close. I wont be able to get a picture of it by myself and hubby with things like that. I tried to look at it more closely yeaterday when he took a shower but I have a very hard time holding him to do things like that. He is a wiggle worm!! If it was an infection, wouldn't he act a bit more sick? He's eating and drinking perfetly. But he is just a bit more quiet however his "daddy" has not been home this week. He loves to talk to his daddy.

| The vet said there was a small divided area at the tip of his preen gland. No one has ever said anything about this before, so obviously it is a new situation. She said that it may be a the start of a tumor of something else. However, he appeared healthy at his exam before boarding and his fecal was also normal. I guess I will have to hold him and take a look at it. I don't like doing that because it does stresses him out, a lot. I know if humans have cancer, usually a blood test can show "markers." Can they do the same for my bird. I know they don't like to draw blood form a bird but if we can pick up on a cancer early, then maybe we can get it treated. Then also it could be benign.

birdlover008 (5/14/2009) If it was an infection, wouldn't he act a bit more sick? He's eating and drinking perfetly. But he is just a bit more quiet however his "daddy" has not been home this week. He loves to talk to his daddy. No, not necessarily. Mind you, this doesn't mean that he is not feeling poorly, he most likely does but birds keep on acting as if everything is OK until they are very, very sick. But you did say that he was more quiet than usual and that, in itself, it's a symptom. Besides, if the AV thought it was an infection, he would have prescribed antibiotics for him so it must be a mass and, if it is, a biopsy is in order.

| Just an update on by bird's preen gland. The vet stated that his preen gland ended in a 'fork.' Which is a new situation. I hate to hold him down so when he was cleaning himself I would always try to take a look at it. I have been keeping my eye on it and definitely notice that this 'growth' was getting longer, and it has only been 3 weeks since they said it was there. So back to the vet we went. She said that it's not unusual for some birds to have a problem with the preen gland. This growth did not look cancerous to her however she has not seen anything quite like this before. So we took a biopsy of it. I had to give give meds for 5 days, an antibiotic and some pain medicine. He's doing very well right now. The lab report should be back by Wednesday. We'll go from there.
