Hi,
Yesterday or the day before, I noticed the white skin around my conure's left eye was swollen/puffy, and he was semi-blinking that eye sometimes (as opposed to it being open all the time). He seems to be a little less excitable than normal, too (I only noticed this after I noticed the eye swelling). I made a vet appointment for Friday, but I'm not sure what the problem is. I searched the symptoms on this website and it directed me to an 'Eye injury' link...which makes some sense, since my bird did get scared and flew around the cage the other day when I moved something in his cage. Before I read that article, I thought it might be something in his eye or an eye infection. Today, there were a few thin faint red lines on the skin around his eye. I assume those are blood vessels. Now I'm anxious to get him to the vet.
Do you have any idea what this eye problem might be indicative of?
Thanks.

karge, it sounds like an injury from flapping around in the cage, and the vet will so know better than I. I am glad you made the appointment and I hope that you will let us all know how the visit went.

It sounds like he may have bruised his eye. Good luck with the vet check and please tell us what it is afterwards!

It is, most likely, from hitting it but there should be some bruising if this was the case and it doesn't appear to be any so that's puzzling. It could be a number of things so it's good that you are taking him to the vet. In the meantime, if there is any discharge, wipe it off with a cotton ball soaked in cool chamomille and regular black tea (a teabag of each with hot water -not boiling!- poured over them all the way up to the edge of the cup, let steep for five minutes). It's very soothing and reduces inflammation.

| My macaw's eyes look like that when she has a sinus infection or her allergies bother her.

Icky, what is your macaw allergic to and what did your vet prescribe for it? I am asking because I have a bird that has been diagnosed with allergies but I am really not convinced that this is the problem with him.
