Welcome, congrats on your new addition.  I am not an expert on Amazon parrots (my husband won't let me add one to our flock) or biting issues, but I can share what has worked for me.  First, I would recommend that you get a book on Amazon parrots and read it (if you haven't already). I have found species specific books very helpful with our flock.

The easiest thing I have found to prevent/deter bites is when you are holding the bird and you anticipate a bite to drop your hand down a short distance rapidly.  The "drop" forces the bird to raise their head and wings to keep their balance and removes their beak from proximity to your hand.  Be careful, you don't want the bird to fall, so be sure you and the bird have a good grip on your hand.

I have also tried to use words to deter biting.  It has never been an issue with our Senegal but our CAG is a baby (10 mths) and she is learning.  When I notice that she is thinking of biting, or doing something that may result in a fall (they are somewhat clumsy) I say CAREFUL very gently.  I have done this often and now when I say it she immediately looks up at me--preventing the fall or bite.

That is all I can contribute.  I am sure there are other Amazon parents that will contribute better ideas for you.  Good luck with your new fid.

Hi, and welcome to the forum!
I have a BFA who will turn 9 in a couple of months. Bites, I know!
I would get the Beak Book by Sally Blanchard.
Amazon's are biters. They are quick to get excited and quick to react. They seldom ( as adults) give warning bites. So reading body language is very important. In other words if you do not want to get bitten, watch the eyes and not the beak.
You are wise to get her off your shoulder. There are a lot of height issues that birds can get into and you do not want your face ( eyes!) in the way of a battle for superiority.
The drop is a good idea so is a variation called the earth quake. With the bird on your hand, if the bird starts to bite you give a little wiggle.
It used to be suggested that to stop biting that you tap or take hold of the beak. But this actually encourages biting and resentment. I think these people should get their own nose thumped or grabbed and they would see why the bird reacts negatively.
Your calm and quiet reaction is very wise. When the bird is wound up, you want to be the voice of reason.

Welcome to you and your zoo.

I had 2 ferrets.  I miss them terribly.  They were so much fun.  Someday I am sure I will have another.

Amazons are the best!

My advice is to just be patient. There will be bites, you just have to watch their body language and learn when not to invade their space. As for taling, just give her time and she will be talking more than you want to hear!

Amazons are great fun birds. Congratulations!

Welcome to the forum! You have been given great advice. Unfortunately with Amazons, bites seem to be a little more the norm. They do have a lower bite inhibition and will grab a finger to make a point- they don't mess around with warning you. As everyone else has stated, watch the eyes, my amazons will usually pin their eyes, the feathers stand up on the back of their neck and they hunch down with their legs spread far apart right before they bite.

As for talking, what type of amazon do you have? (I am sorry if I missed that part.) Some species are better talkers than others. Also, remember that just because it is a talking species of bird, some individuals may decide that they do not want to speak at all.

Welcome to the forum, wow sounds like you have you hands full with all of the animals and kids at your house, must be a busy place. Congratulations on your Zon that was a long time to wait for it, I'm sure it will be worth the wait they are wonderful parrots.

The difference between parrots and kids is that it's cute when a parrot talks back.
