| Well I got both my amazons as adults so im not really sure when the hormonal stage starts...But I can tell you this Pocco is 23 and he is a hormonal BEAST! ALWAYS! LOL Aries is hormonal often but not as bad as Pocco and also you have a YNA wich is whats considered one of the Hot 3...more likely to be nippy. From what I hear male amazons are worse than females..both mine are males so I have no comparison. I just know my boys are moody little buggers. Oh I know I make them sound awful but they are still a great joy tpo have, and when they are lovey they are so sweet! I just take advantage of the good days...because I know its likely the next day they will want to eat my face! LOL

Well, Miss Willow is 8 and I have had her since she was 5 months old. I think at age 3 or 4 she started to get testy.
She seems to be more cranky or aggressive a couple of times a year. It seems to be spring and fall for a couple of months each. I am careful not to stimulate her sexually when I touch her and to keep her light and foods like what she would experience in the NON mating season.
But adult zons are an emotional group anyway. They are just about obnoxious but still in the brilliantly charming stage most of the time.
Start training your bird to accept a hand held perch so that when these moods hit, you will still have a way to have some control. The more Willow gets wound up, the more I unwind. If I can not keep my level of energy down when her's is up, I put her safely in her cage and go away to get my mood under control. SOME one has to be the adult here.
Are you aware of the Zon overload behaviors? Flaring tail, wings held like she has her fists on her hips, snakey motions of the head and the flashing eyes all mean you are in the red zone. With Willow, I see the eyes first. By the time we are into snakey head movements, it is too late and all heck is going to break loose. Or worse, I am looking for a bandage for my hand.
You have to remind yourself that these hormonal reactions are not something they can control. So you need to be kind but assertive.
Adult zons are not an easy bunch to handle. I have had a lot of different birds in the past and they are as emotional as I have encountered. When they love they love totally and when the are angry no one is spared. I personally love the challenge.
