| Hey Everyone, As I mentioned before Dugan and Finnigan were given to me by a professor at school that could no longer take care of them. She really loved her birds and it was really hard for her to give them away but she knew it was in their best interest. Her husband passed away and it was hard for her to give them the time they deserved. Now my question is, do you think its a good idea for her to come and visit them? She has come to visit them twice so far. I was planning on calling her again to tell her to come but I am worried now that it might not be the best for them but I am not sure. The reason I am asking is because I used to volunteer at an animal shelter and I know that one of the rules is that the previous owner is not allowed to visit after giving the pet up. Is this only true for cats and dogs or do birds get depressed too? Thank you

I think one reason that shelters say that is to make sure the previous owner makes the emotional break and in case there is bad feeling between the animal and human.
How did they act before? Were they Ok while she was there and afterwards? I think I would go by that more than anything.

They seemed fine after. When she was here they let her hold them and play with them. Finnigan, probably bc he is an amazon, showed more interest in her. He was chatting and giving her all the right signs. She was a bit hesitant to hold him though because she said that after her husband died Finnigan became very aggressive towards her. So i picked him up and he went right to her without any problems. I just wanted to double check because it took a very long time to get them to where they are now and I wouldnt want them to regress at all. I would be worried more about Finnigan than about Dugan bc Dugan is always just going about his bussiness not really worrying about anyone else. I think she deserves to see them and it might even be good for both of them in the end.

I would not, you & the birds want to keep moving forward not back, if you want to update the previous owner why don't you take some pictures and send a nice letter telling her how happy and adjusted they are. And just explain you don't want to confuse them or damage the trust you have built with them, it is in the best interest of the birds I am sure she would understand. Good luck

Do you think the birds start to believe they are going home when they see her? Or is seeing her merely a reminder of the past that could possibly cause them to regress?
