Welcome to the Wonderful World of Amazons!

Be patient and pay attention. All you need to know. Amazons will tell you everything you need to know about whether or not they are happy.

My Asha likes toys she can destroy. She is not much for foot toys or wood blocks. She just likes to shred stuff. Also, she generally ignores any toy for about a week before playing with it. As has been mentioned, do not overfeed and make sure the guy gets lots of exercise!

Beautiful bird. Would love to have one.

Something I read somewhere, probably here on the BC, is to stick plain unscented tissues in and on the new toy when you put it in the cage.  You can even tie some to it.  I do that with every new toy I give Tucker (my  CAG).  They all look the same when he gets a new toy that way and then he unwraps it at his leisure and finds an awesome toy to play with inside.  Has worked great for me.

I would like to thank you all for taking time to write out your detailed posts for me!! They are all great help to me in this new adventure with my Murphy! I am taking it very slow with him. He is very unsure of hands right now. I lay my hand out flat and let him take a few Cheerios from it off and on throughout the day. I hope over time this will help him learn to trust me and my hands. Most of it is just reading his signs when he is starting to get upset then I step away and talk soothingly to him from a distance and let him be. He sure enjoys his time on his playstand He seems to be more interested in talking with my husband and more interested in him in general. Which is totally fine as he loves the birds also. I hope over time we can have a relationship also. I know they generally pick one person and get very attached. It is just weird because my husband can put his hand or arm up to him and ask him to step up and Murphy just goes to him... With knowing so little about his past I guess it is possible that a woman may have done something to him. I also have to remember that the husband was the bird person in his past home and take that into consideration. We will see how the cookie crumbles so to speak. I was also speaking with my best friend who is also a bird person and she said it is possible in some breeds for the bird to like the opposite sex better no matter what. So I may have him DNA'd sexed when I take him to the vet just to see if he is really a he LOL.

I have been giving fresh veggies and ect to him and believe it or not he is taking a huge interest in them here even though he didnt get that in his other home. Adding a little pellets to his seed and he has readily been eating those as well.

I am very happy with how well he is adjusting thus far.

Welcome to the forum :) I am new as well. I have a yellow naped amazon named Ricky. I have had her for 11 years and she never really enjoyed toys. The only toy she has ever played with is this one from drs foster and smith. http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=5059+5648+5753+10217&pcatid=10217

It's not expensive at all and they seem to love to break it to pieces to get he knots out. Amazons are extremely picky birds but they know what they want and they know exactly how to let you know. It seems like your doing great! At least he is already eating fresh veggies. Ricky still gives me a hard time with food. Good luck with him and keep up the good work.

P.S. He looks great!

Hello and welcome,

My BFA's name is Toto, he is a rambunctious male bird whom I like to hand wrestle with for his personal stimulation. He's been with me for over 21 years as a room mate since my single days. He's got quite a chewing hobby so I cut chunks of lumber for him so he could make toothpicks for me. And as expected from a personal bird he has a character and personality all his own vocabulary set and amusing behaviors.

Your new bird is beautiful!

My DYH Amazon really enjoys it when I stick an empty toilet paper roll in between his cage bars. I usually cut one end into strips and bend them so the roll is more anchored between the bars. He will shred it, and stick some of the shredding in his water bowl.

Just thought I would stop in and let everyone know that Murphy is settling in quite well. He can be nippy at times, but it is getting better with time. I have him almost switched over to pellets and he loves all the fresh foods I have been giving him. His favorites so far have been soup beans and cooked pasta. He loves grapes, but I try to limit them as they are so high in sugar and ect.....

here are a few pics of me and my boy!

Enjoy!!

Love the bath pictures! So glad you are doing better, just take it slow it will be worth it Zons are amazing.

The difference between parrots and kids is that it's cute when a parrot talks back.
