I have had a Flair air purifier in my bird room for about 7 yrs. It is shot. I was wondering what other air purifiers people use that they are happy with.

this is an excellent question.  i am in the process of choosing my first air filter and i am confused by all the options.  i heard the ionic filters are not safe for pets, can someone tell me if that's true?  if anyone can provide recommendations, i would be greatful.  my worst fear is becoming allergic to my birds, which would be the end of my life as i know it.  i recently adopted my 8th bird, so i need something asap.  p.s. i do have central air with a hepa filter, but i have found that it has limitations and is not effective enough alone.  thanks in advance for any help!

Since neither of you say what you want the filter to do, I’ll assume it’s simply to remove particulates from the air and not kill pathogens (bacteria, fungi and viruses) it may capture. First, most ion based filters produce ozone and ozone is a known harmful gas for birds (and people too). Second, a properly sized (meaning larger than is required for the room size) true HEPA filter will capture and purify the air in the room with your birds. There are many retail brands of these filters sold at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Sears, other large retailers and on the Internet.
If you want a filter that is designed to kill the pathogens it traps, there are fewer models and they are more expensive. I have a JWR Air Filter (http://www.aircleanersforbirds.com/index.htm) that I have been very please with and have recommended to others. In addition to this filter, there are other air filters I’ve seen described and for sale in Bird Talk magazine.
Good luck in finding the filter that fits the needs of you and your birds.

thanks for the advice!  i visited the websites of the retailers you suggested, and i am also researching a few that were advertised in "bird talk".  i had no idea that there was such a wide variety of filters, it's a little confusing.  however, i know to stay away from the ionic filters! when i make a choice on a filter, i will let everyone know how it works out.

thanks again!

just wanted to let everyone know i finally settled on the rabbit air deluxe air filter i saw in bird talk.  it's been running in the bird's room for 2 months now and i love it.  it's easy to assemble and cleaning is a breeze, and i was able to choose among three specialty filters that go in between the regular filter pack when i ordered it.  this lets you customize the filter pack to suit your needs.  it can also be mounted on the wall if you like. i chose the pollen/fine dust filter because the birds' dust was starting to get all over the house.  i have seen a dramatic reduction of dust on the furniture, etc. whatever brand you choose, it's important to cut down on how much bird dust you breathe in because my vet told me some people do develop bird allergies after a few years, especially if you have multiple birds, such as we do.

You've decided you should have an air cleaner in your home to reduce allergens, but where should you place it? And where would it be of greatest benefit? Since a small air purifier or cleaner's coverage area is limited by design, you'll want to place it where you can benefit from it the most.

To anyone out there who wonders what type of an air purifier to get, I bought the Rabbit Air Purifier that is advertised in BT magazine.  It was expensive, but it has done wonders.  I have five heavily dust producing birds.  Namely, two large cockatoos, two cockatiels and one Quaker parrot.  After cleaning the bird room, I would develop a dry cough that would last for several days.  Actually, this went on for several years before I found what was needed to prevent the dust from flying around while I was cleaning.  This type of air purifier actually prevents the dust from flying around in the first place.  Yes, if you "stir up" the dust, it will fly around but settle quite quickly.  It also eliminates odors.  My husband, who is not a bird person, walked into the bird room one day and said, "Wow, it doesn't smell in here."  I am in no way, shape or form affiliated with this company.  I'm only stating facts that might help people to be able to keep their birds who might not otherwise be able to do so.  The other plus is that this machine "tells" you when it's time to clean the filters.  The first and third filter can be soaked to clean.  The middle filter needs to be periodically vacuumed depending on the dust content of your birds.  I have told my husband many times that this air purifier has been a God send.  For me and my birds.

I'll add my recommendation for the Rabbit Air purifiers.  I bought one in the spring because my spring time allergies were off the chart.  I liked it so much I bought a second one for my upper floor.  I didn't even have birds then so I was happy to see it advertised in the Bird Talk mag before I even adopted my budgies, thinking I was at least bringing them into fairly healthy air quality.  The dust is minimal where before I would have to dust each and every week.  The air smells great and it has multiple settings and filters you can order for whatever use you need.  They are also very cost efficient as you can clean the filters in between having to purchase new ones.  Much cheaper than air purifiers I have had in the past.  They've been winning alot of awards lately for their technology as well.  I so do not miss playing "what's that smell?" when I come home in the evenings . . .
