I've tried to eat it with him but he just takes it from me and drops it. I've made yummy sounds while eating, he just picks it up, drops it and ignores me for a while. A passing phase like all kids have. I loveanimals and wasn't totally against the idea. (We have two parakeets, and figured one more couldn't hurt.) So we stopped by the local PetCo (I know, I know) one afternoon while doing some shopping. There were some cockatiels in the store, as well as a conure and a Meyers Parrot. I'd never heard of a Meyers, but he was cute, quiet, and just sorta muched away at his food while every other bird in the room was on alert.

After coming home, I looked the species up on the web, and learned a little about them. The next day my husband went in with us.. I can't remember why.. I think we were out shopping again. It was just after school started in Sept, so we were probably still getting supplies 'n stuff. Anyway, the minute we walked into the bird room, the Meyers perked up and started reaaaallyy paying attention to my husband. It was love at first sight... but the price was out of the question at the time (as well as overpriced for the breed to my understanding @ $600). I'm also not a huge fan of buying pets from pet stores.

So I did more research, and even got on a waiting list for a hand-fed at a bird specialty shop, with the understanding they would likely not have any until spring. I looked all over for Meyers breeders, but could find none in my area. I didn't want to have one shipped.

But I kept going back to PetCo to visit "Mikey". I knew if I were to get him, I was in for a bit of a bumpy ride, since he'd been there a while, was older, and likely not treated too well by some of the customers. (One day while we were visiting him, a woman came into the bird room with a young boy. The woman was probably in her mid 30's, and started raking her hands across the bars saying "Polly want a cracker?" over and over. I wanted to smack her. The birds were terrified.)

So, time passes and Christmas rolls around. Mikey was STILL there. At this point, to our understanding he'd been at the store over a year. The story goes that the manager ordered him while still being hand fed, thinking an apartment dweller would want him. But alas, no one was interested in the dull brown & green bird priced at $600.

Christmas Eve, my husband (as a present to me) went into the store and offered the manager $400. To our absolute surprise, he took it. And the staff was elated that Mikey had finally found a home.

So what did we know about this bird? He'd been there for over a year, he could make some clicking sounds but was pretty quiet, had an interest in my husband, but wasn't necessarily hand tame.. tho shoulders were an acceptable perch. lol

What have we found out since getting Mikey home? After a few days his personality started to come out. We found out he knows a couple of words we can distinguish, and a few we're still trying to figure out. "Pretty Bird" is VERY clear. And can do a mean wolf whistle, and a really gruff "hello". We also believe he says "What'cha doin" and "workin". I can only assume he picked up the first from staff and visitors.. and the second by the answer the staff gave when he said the first. lol

He's afraid of hands, but will very readily perch on my husband's shoulder. And whenever my husband comes in from work or walks into the room after waking up (he works nights,) Mikey goes nuts whistling and going through his whole vocabulary to get his attention. It cracks me up. He does 'some' greeting to me and my oldest son when we come in from being gone from the house, but nothing like what he does to get the hubby's attention.

He likes scratches, but on his terms. You can ask if he wants them, and he will bend his head down, and that's a sign to commence the lovin's. I am able to do this through the bars, as well as outside the cage. My youngest son (11) is able to give him scratches as well.

My daughter is learning to feed him treats through the bars to stem her fear of him biting her. He will take treats from anyone, but is a tad mean to my oldest son, acting like he's going to bite him when he dives in with his beak to get the treat. lol

I have high hopes that Mikey will become a loving, hand tame parrot I've always hoped for.. but even if I'm never able to handle him like I want to, he's got a safe home, huge cage and people that will love him for the rest of his life.

'ello

ok since I am new i decided to say hi. gotta be friendly if you want people to be friendly right? anyway I only have one bird, a cockatiel named Scooby. We live in Massachusetts. I'm rather new to having birds (used to have horses). I got Paris in September and found poor Rocky at the local SPCA shelter the day before Thanksgiving. They put the poor bird in the same room with the quarantined cats! I wasn't planning on a second bird but couldn't just walk away and leave him there. He's passed his health check and is now a permanent member of the flock.

Newww

Hi,im amanda im new to birdchannel.I own 5 cockatiels. My friend wanted me to post a topic so here u go erica.lol.I love birds and think there awesome =].My bird Lyzzie and izzie had 4 babies so i kept 3 of the babies and my friend took the other.(EriNes11 on here)I haven't been breeding cockatiels for a long time. Yes, an english male. I was able to contact a breeder who said that he just dropped off the last clutch of english at a store in nyc. I contacted the store where they confirmed the new babies that had just been weaned and also stated that there was a three or four mth old male that seemed to be chatty and was able to imitate the phone ringing. When I got to the store I briefly looked at the babies, but I knew for me it would only a 50/50 chance of picking out a male. I soooo wanted a male. Then I looked over at this cage with some lovebirds and I think either two or three english. Funny thing, fell in love with the coloring of the male that I told chats. Again he is about 3/4 mths old. He was handfed at the store at three wks old. But after being weaned, he didn't have any human contact. Didn't think at time of my purchasing the little guy that he wasn't being handled.

He,...."Winston", has been home now for about a wk. He comes out on my hand ....sometimes on my shoulder.....sometimes, actually, more often than not, he flies away from me too. He rarely chirps and has yet to show any interest in his toys. He eats and stares. I'm wondering if I'm expecting too much as I'm concerned why he does not even chirp? Just once in awhile I'll hear him. Wonder if anyone has comments or suggestions. Maybe I'm expecting too much.

Also need some suggestions about his droppings. Seem very dry and dark. I've seen him drink water and he eats romaine lettuce. Won't touch anything else...not even fruit. His diet consists of half cup each of seeds and pellet. Thanks for you're input.

New Here!!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Tammy and I'm from Connecticut. My husband and I recently purchased a Sun Conure we named Sunny. He is about 4 1/2 months old. He seems to have settled in nicely, even though we have only had him for about 5 weeks or so. Even from day one, he seemed to be quite comfortable. Although I know he has quite a ways to go before he is completely comfortable. He still won't get up on the play gym on the top of his cage. He would much rather sit with either me or my husband.

He loves mashed potatos, brocolli, peas, apples and bananas. He won't eat them out of a bowl. I have to had feed him or hold the dish I place them in.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone here and learning as much as I can about Sun Conures.

Hello from our Flock

Hi! I'm new here... I already have a sizeable flock... you can read their names/species in my signature...

More details - the cockatiel, Katana, is a cinnoman female, the sun conure is male, the senegal parrot is a female, for the budgies (all are blue by the way) Tink (double yellowface sky blue) and Klink (peid, white and blue, possibly violet) had Neptune (dark slatey purple/blue, single yellowface), Pluto and Monster (both double yellowface, clearflight peids, skyblue). Klutz is the odd one out, and she is a skyblue opaline.

Oh yeah, the lovebird... pretty sure it's male... really, really sweet little guy, over a year old, just got him. Need a name. I suggested to my sissy "Pimento" 'cuz he looks like a pimento olive, but she disagrees.

The dogs... yeah... yorkie, three shih tzus... the yorkie is male, the shih tzus are female.

Chickens... yeah, finally laying again! They have a cage and tower uptairs in the kitchen near a window, and their own aviary room in the split level basement where they can view the world though their windows as well. They had been going outside in a cage as well, until a two foot hawk perched on their cage. They have had several adventures including recently moving from Las Vegas in a mini-van.
Abbey is about 15 or so, a female raised from a baby. The boys Blackjack an Keno are about three. We got them from a friend who owned a pet store, and gave them to us to raise since they were not getting attention or being sold.
They like to talk across the house, lay on their backs and get cuddled, eat everything, play in boxes, and generally chew anything they can.
We'll post the harrowing story of their escape from the hawk later. My name it Martha and I am owned by 3 cockatiels!
The first cockatiel is Kinta. He's been with me since August 2006 . I brought him home when he was 7 weeks old. Of course, since he's my 'baby', we have a special bond.

The next cockatiel to join the flock is Parker. I know we're not supposed to support chain pet stores by buying their birds, but he was just pathetic and needed to come home with me. He is a nervous bird, but still just a joy to have around. I've had him a little over a year now. He really didn't bond with me, but he tolerates being handled and is truly a sweet natured bird.

The third cockatiel was my daughter's. He's about 13 years old and has been with the flock for about 6 months. His name is Kako. Kako and I go way back when he was a baby too. My daughter used to bring him home from college and when she traveled, Kako stayed with me.

Everyone is doing great. I just have a question about Kako the older bird. Since living with me, he has lost some weight. His keel bone is more prominent than the other two birds. He was basically ignored until he came to live with me. He very rarely got out of the cage. So, I guess he just became a true perch potato. Now that he lives with me, he is talking more, playing with more toys and I get him out of the cage every day. It may just be for morning chores, but he gets out. At first, he wasn't very agreeable about coming out and if he protested too much, I wouldn't press him. He has bitten me a couple of times, but I was pushing him a bit too much to step up. He eats a good diet of pellets and he is becoming more interested in new foods. He actually tries some of the fresh veggies now and loves popcorn.

I guess I just need to know if I should have any concerns about the weight loss. He acts fine, preens, his feathers are in good condition, he has no symptoms whatsoever. He is currently in the middle of a light molt, and has lost a few long wing feathers. They look great without any stress bars. He eats good, the poop is just the same as it always has been, he's interested in what's going on around him and he flies very well. He's never been clipped in his life and I hate to clip his wings at this point.

Thanks for reading this and I'd love some feedback!

Martha

Introduction of my flock

Hey Everyone! We have owned and reared teils, conures and Lorikeets, and I am currently owned by a year old Male Rainbow Lorikeet named Tookie.

I didn't handraise this guy myself, but baught him as a 10 weeks old handreared and DNA'd Male.
He is rather shy and skitty at times, i think he was just handfed rather then what I would class as "handreared" meaning he was not given much human contact other then being fed.
He does not like scratches or much contact and freaks out if u try touch him which is a real shame. I have worked on this slowly and he is alittle better but is much happier doing his own thing.

here are some pics of him shortly after I got him! I don't have a bird...yet , but I'm considering getting a 'keet. I'm not a huge "bird person", I'm really a herper (keeper of reptiles and amphibians). Currently I only have three lizards (2 Leopard Geckos and 1 Crested Gecko) because my parents are pretty restrictive with pets. But in January, I'll be going to a reptile show and getting a Bearded Dragon (another lizard) and a White's Treefrog. I'd also like to get 2 Lined Day Geckos, 1 Fire Skink, and a bunch of other things, but I guess I'll have to wait a little while. I also have fish (bettas and a 29g community) and a Chinese Hamster. I'm a member of ReptileChannel, FishChannel, and SmallAnimalChannel, but ReptileChannel is my favorite. But anyways, I'm looking to get a parakeet soooo I'll be posting here now.

So hey....

Oh, and how do you change your forum username? I believe they are both around 5-6 weeks old? They are male and female, Romeo and Juliet. This is only the second full day we have had them. I am concerned because Juliet is not eating. We had them both out of their cage for a while yesterday. When I first took each out, they bit me several times, I just tried to remain calm while trying to get them to let go. I thought Juliet was going to take a chunk out of my finger! She is fiesty! We got them to the point that they would sit quietly and sweetly on our hand for a while. Romeo kept wanting to make his way back over to where Juliet was sitting with me. Romeo was actually eating our of our hands. My 10 year old said he was eating quite a bit. I have yet to see Juliet eat. Their food looks untouched. I read that if they don't eat by day two I should call a bird vet. I am hoping to avoid having to do this. Does anyone have any ideas for how to get my birds to eat? I thought I heard one of them eating after I put their cover over their cage last night, but when I peaked in they were both sitting on the swing at the top of their cage. As I am sure most of you can tell, Romeo is the bright green one, Juliet is a mix of yellow and green.

New here, not new to birds!

Hello! My name is Jan. Now I have lots of time to enjoy my birds and I hope to increase the size of my bird family in the future.

We will be building a new house in a year or so...so that means I will get my very own Bird Room! So if there are photos of bird rooms hiding somewhere in the forum....please point the way...I would love to look at them and get some ideas!

Right now I have a young Senegal parrot, 2 Owl finches....and 1 Lady Gouldian finch. They all keep me entertained and I enjoy having them in my life.

I have a daughter who is a small animal Veterinarian and I have infected her with my love of birds. She has 4 parakeets and sometimes I get to babysit for the "GrandFids".

My other passion is playing my Harps and Native American Flutes. I volunteer playing my harp for patients at a local hospital and I also play at the nursing home and for my church.

Looking forward to looking at bird photos and making some friends here.

thanks for the appreciation

Thank you so much for your wonderful response to my gang..In ansewer to some of the questions, Jay bird is great, eats like a horse, but sleeps alot..the goffins are trouble makers, as I have had 2 computer mice, walk across the floor with a goffin attached to the wire. so now it is covered with a blanket.. Everyone is out..except keets and finches..I am a traffic cop when it comes to the goffins, but if i am going to do something else, They go back in the cage..Mostly they are attached to me like velcro...Most of the birds get along, once in a while a small argument but nothing much..You can find the lovebirds, green cheek, tiels, and the rosella all in the same big tiel cage, just hanging out...those pictures were taken with an instant camera I will try to do better, but I had to practice getting the pictures up..took me days..LOL

thanks again

Janet

New from LA with Western Rosella

Hi all! Love this site. It's very informative and helpful.

About 3 months ago, a Western Rosella (I don't have a photo yet) flew into my apartment and now I am a very happy bird owner. He is such a beautiful and funny bird.

As I understand it, no matter how they are raised, the Rosella never really becomes tame enough to sit on a shoulder or be a companion like other parrots will. My bird - "Birdie", loves to communicate as long as I keep my distance. He has however, trained me to bring him treats by flapping his wings and whistling at me. We play for a couple of hours every evening. He flaps, I get up and bring him a little something. I hold it up to his cage and tell him what the treat is, and then put it into his food dish. Then I ring his bell and go back to the sofa. He climbs down from his perch and eats the treat. I also try to spend a bit of time a few times a day, standing near the cage, speaking to him. He mostly stays at the far end of his cage, just staring at me. I don't know if he'll ever bond with me, but I'll keep trying things.

In any case, I never really considered a parrot as a pet, but now I am a big fan. Thanks for sharing your experiences and advice on this forum.

help posting pics/ avatar

HI!!!

I'm relatively new, made a few posts. I have committed my time and energies to a beautiful little Too whose name is Miah (pronounced my-uh) which means "moon" in one of the Australian aboriginal languages. I gave careful consideration to getting her because I have a flock of three other large parrots already: Coby, a Panama yellow-crowned Amazon (age 15), Pancho, a B&G macaw (my BIG baby, age 14) and Bo-Bo, a scarlet macaw (age 11). As many of you know, I lost my beloved oldest girl, Precious, one of the two birds that I hand-fed (Pancho being the other one) last month. Precious was a Panama yellow-crowned Amazon and her loss was devastating to my whole flock. We are slowly recovering and all of us are doing ok. Miah is lively and fun and I have researched her species carefully. We are taking all the appropriate quarantine precautions and she was fully avian vet-checked yesterday. We are setting the ground rules early with Miah so she does not become spoiled and overly dependent on people for her every distraction, but still gets her own set of snuugles and attention every day. As soon as we have pictures (our digital camera got lost on a recent trip) I will post them to show everyone my loving flock. Thank you all for the feedback, grief support and friendship you have given us. I'll post pictures soon! Thanks again from Deb, Coby, Pancho, Bo-Bo, Miah, Tank (our English bulldog) and Buggie (our West Highland White Terrier.)

New and need help!!

Hello all!
