I love all kind of animals, especially parrots!

I have three untame budgies, Silver who is nine, Lilly who is seven and Sunny who's age is guesstimated at about nine. I've had Silver and Lilly since they were babies and Sunny was a rescue.

Silver (white spangle) and Lilly

Sunny

More recently in July last year, I brought home a hand raised cockatiel. I never came up with a name good enough for him, so, his name just ended up being Bird.

He really enjoys head scratches.

I've read heaps and heaps of bird articles but mostly it's been a learn as I go thing. I'm definitely content with cockatiels for now! I'd love to have an eclectus and a grey one day, but that will have to wait until after school.

There's heaps of things I need to work on, such as more bonding and out-of-cage time, improving diet and in the sun time. Ever since I got Bird I've been considering a friend for him and I've decided that I'm going to go ahead and get a new bird, most likely from the same place. I've just got to sort out quarantine. I can tell he's craving birdy friends and a constant companion. He screams when I leave the room, I absolutely hate the noise, it sends pangs of guilt through me.

Anyways, thanks for reading! Since then she has flourished & blossomed, her vocabulary has multiplied many times over, her sex has been identified (she's laid 26 eggs so far - I know, not good, am trying to control my affection). I have been allowing her to have run of the house, even tho she's destroyed 8 prs of shoes, an antique armoire & my lingerie dresser.
Her diet is perfect, prescribed by the vet, with treats off my plate once in awhile. However, she's been diagnosed obese. I caught her eating the dry dog food (yes, she gets along great with the dogs & cat), so I'm slowly keeping her in her cage more often - & it's making me sad. It seems so boring! Tons of toys, TV, diversions, food, water - can't wait to get home to be with her. What's wrong with me? Or is she truly bored?

Wanting a Macaw... in Portland Oregon

I have been a bird owner for about 20 years now - started with Naday and now have a Timneh Grey for the last 16 years. Then the next day I cut his claws and he moved his foot and I cut his claw too much so again he got a fright. Then the next day he got his foot caught in the tassles of a rug so again I had to get his foot out. He has had such a fright from 3 things in 3 days that he now frightened of me.

This happened a week ago but will still come onto my hand but he is hand scared of me and every time I go to pat him he bends back away from me or tries to grab my finger. I have been trying every day to get him used to my hands again but am wondering how I should go about it as what I am doing isn't working. Sometimes he will let me pat him but most times not.

Do you have any advice as to how I should go about getting his trust again. He will still sit on my shoulder and likes to hop inside my top still .

I am devastated as he used to love me so much and wasn't scared of me at all and would lay in my hand and sleep.

Any advice would be appreciated. May sound crazy...

But nay, I started this about five years ago when I was going through some legal difficulty. The crows...would show up Every time just before another round of that was to present itself.

That worked out and we started feeding the local birds As well as talking to them.

As we know now, they are All about communication. They've also the collective mind....

I'm being very brief here. But I am FED UP as they simply won't leave me alone now. Every where I go they are there yapping at me. I've learned their language.

Most days they sit outside the house and listen to my thoughts. If I have any transient or wayward thought they sound off!! This has turned into a kind of thriller scenario. They also like to flow my creative thinking as I compose music etc. The annoying thing is they feel compelled to sing or tweet about any of this.

I could write a book. Here is the latest event that shows how far this - and they - have gone.

I tried to ignore them while at the same time mocking them simply to leave me alone. I was out driving one morning and I saw a robin on the side of the road. Being astute I noticed it was watching me and had that "getting ready" vibe. It actually Ran out in front of me...where if I did Not swerve I would have crushed it. Clearly a test. Right after that two other birds swooped down in a playful way; clearly happy that I cared enough to swerve.

This is how screwed up all this has become. Crows...now these smart alecs can be the worst pests imaginable. They mock, accuse, are nosey, gossip etc. Astrologically, they are Saturnian imo.

Now of course all of them have good sides - they are just like people.

My question is how to disconnect from them. I will admit Jays are awesome and they always show up when I'm in good spirits etc. They are "spiritually" connected. I consider them more Jovian (of Jupiter).

It is very easy to understand them When they're talking about humans. But they still have their own alien conversations. In any case, they are extremely psychic and that in essence is the problem.

I could write an ebook of all my experiences which of course would be a log of anecdotes. Would folks be interested in this? But if I worked on that I'd have to do it at night!!

I've Screamed at these mothers to leave me the !#@%! alone. But they won't and that is odd. I also admit that if I did really disconnect I'd likely start to miss them real quick.

Have a Bird Question

I am trying to find someone who knows about african greys , I am wanting to buy one and I found someone who has 2 . but the pictures she has send me do not look like the right bird .
They are suppose to be Timneh but the pictures look like Congo . He was hand fed, and sang beautifully. Unfortunately I lost him last month and haven't gotten over it yet. He was the 3rd out of 4 pet losses in one year. WOW. They all meant so much to me, I felt like I didn't even have a chance with 3 of them. I also have had cockatiels, zebra finches and budgies.

One was a parrotlet which I purchased with another female and one male. I really don't know what happened, it could have be that I had to separate her and it was too much to handle. Her name was Layla, hence the username. That's what I used to call her. They all have their "pet names" no pun intended!

So now I have two, Pete and Neveah. Full names. But I always call them Petie and Nevie. For some reason they like words with the hard "e" on the end. I am working on the talking thing. They have chosen certain sounds but not actual words. Plus they like to be in the same cage most of the time and its a distraction having them together so training has not been easy. I am working on getting them to not be so intimidated by me coming close to their cage. They are 5 months old. Possibly going to breed them. I can't resist their lovey-ness together and I want them to have the best life possible. Although it's not always fun leaving them alone and in the same cage for more than an hour or two. It terrifies me !!

So that's my green rump parrotlets. Petie is , of course as a male protective. He's full of energy. Nevie is very alert, and she's quiet and sweet. They get along well so far. I'm waiting to see what happens when the weather here is warmer. Any breeding behavior which I know nothing about, they will be separated. IF I decide to let them breed they'll have to wait another year and a half. They're still babies!!!

Nice to meet the crowd. Thanks for reading :)

Also, I could post a couple videos if possible but I don't have very many good pictures yet. There is one from their first day home, with all 3.

Thanks guys :)

Hi all, Not really new, but I never introuduced myself

Hey Everyone,

I have been here for a while but I never really introduced myself, or my bird Palmer to you! Palmer, or Pom pom as we call him, is a twelve yr old grey tiel! My Boyfriend found him in our back yard when he was about a yr old according to our vet. We did the normal things such as posting flyers, and trying to locate his family to no avail, so when push came to shove and he wasn't spoken for, he became the newest member of our family!

I thought I might share his story with all of you! My Boyfriend became disabled due to degenerative disc disease and had been going through a big change that included depression. I was in the shower. Earlier we had a very bad storm. He came into the bathroom and told me there was a bird in our backyard, and rolling my eyes I was like yeah...so what else is new DUH! He continued to talk and said it was a cockatiel and he was going to go catch it! Bob is known around our town as Dr. Dolittle because of his love for all animals, and for some reason they take to him as thier protector! We have had feral cats,a family of racoons, a flock of turkey's ....all named of course, Squirrels taken from cats and/ or rescued, birds who have flown into our windows etc! I could go on and on! Bob will just hold them comfort them and occasionally we will lose one of God's most precious creatures. Well anyway, he went outside and came back in with a soaking wet cockatiel, thus our story began and Palmer who just so happened to be rescued on a Palm Sunday, hence his name became the talk of the town!

This boy is amazing! When we went to pick him up at the vet, we were told he had a bonus for us and that he could talk and sing! Boy could he ever!!!!! Haaa haaa! Morning, noon and night! We gave him his own room, complete with a flat screen TV that has one channel on all day. That is TV Land. I don't know who loves TV Land more, Palmer, or his dad! In addition to the repitoire Pom Pom already had we have learned through the years that he picks up a new song in a few days! What a quick learner he is! He was hand tamed, and although he loved his benefactor from the first time he hopped up on his finger, he took a while to get use to mom! We laugh at this boy and all the things he can do! He loves, loves loves to dance, talk and sing! Sometimes he holds conversations with himself, of course Bob says I do that too! Palmer loves people, the plumber can be here and there's Palmer sitting on his shoulder as he works to fix a leaky faucet! Everyone Loves this bird and he loves them in return! Two things he doesn't like is stripes, he goes beserk if someone wears a striped shirt! The other is sunglasses! I walked in his room one day with sunglasses atop my head and he went off, crashed into the walls and slid right down it, he must have thought it was a big bug!!!! I thought we had lost him because he cracked his head open, so I yelled for Bob. Palmer wasn't making a sound. Bob came upstairs and got our boy cradled him, talked to him and we heard this little peep that was barely audible, but after staying with Dr. Dolittle for 15 mins he sprung back to life just as happy as can be, but you can bet I tell anyone who comes to the house with sunglasses on, to leave them on the table if they plan on visiting with the bird! Palmer is just a joy!! We get so much entertainment from him, and he loves the scritching he gets! He gets a treat of popcorn every now and then, and we crack up because he really gets into the bag, talks to it, and comes out looking like a miniture Santa Clause with his little popcorn dust beard! With this bird, no matter what kind of bad day you may have he will definitely cheer you up! We have an ongoing joke with our friends, Palmers leg band numbers we play as our lottery numbers, and everytime it hits, our boy gets a bigger cage! He started off with a typical small tiel cage and now he has a parrot cage! haa haa!

He is so spoiled, and we love doing it because he has brought so much happiness to us! We put him in our will to make sure when the time comes he will have someone to love him as much as we do, and we know he will also Love! Palmer will never have to be without a forever home, and since we found out how long tiels can live, we figure he may very well live longer than us, so we made provisions for our adopted feathered son! You just read Palmers story....Welcome to it!!!!! My name is Chris and I've owned birds for more than twenty years now. It started with a pair of zebra finches I bought for my mom's birthday when I was 17 (they didn't ask my age, lol) and from that momen I was hooked. I got my first parrot, a cockatiel I named Lucy (she came to be called Pookie as time went on), and from there I brought home Connor, Murphy, and Sunny, and then my first budgie, Ricky (had two budgies previously that I sort of came to be the keeper of, though technically they belonged to my cousins, and they passed away before I got Ricky), and a few more cockatiels over the years, and then my first conure Rosie, a Dusky Headed, and later a Nanaday conure I named Bobo. Fast forward twenty one years and I am now the proud bird mom to the bunch listed in my signature. Lilah, the IRN is a grey and only about 6 weeks old. I brought her home Friday and am finishing hand feeding her. Soon I'll be handfeeding some lovebirds who's mama died before they hatched. They're just starting to hatch now, so I'll be going to pick them up soon. I'm not keeping any of them though. The parrotlets belong to my younger daughter. We just brought home the African Ringneck Zoe on Friday. She's a rescue and had a rough life before coming here. She is missing all but one toe on her right foot (and the remaining toe is curled under and useless), and missing parts of toes on her other foot). She was kept in the dark in a filthy house, fed the cheapest cockatiel food they sell at Walmart, which is 3/4 millet, and was given no toys or perches. Her cage was filled with black mold too. Since she came to live with us she has been vocalizing constantly, though at first the sun streaming in through my living room window scared the heck out of her, and she has been mumbling and saying a few words. She seems happy, and today she finally took a few bites of food. My cockatiel Bailey is 17 yrs old and is a cranky old guy, but I love him to pieces. His best buddy is Marty, the button quail that thinks he too is a cockatiel. He's a rarer pied color in that he is solid yellow but has one gray feather on his shoulder. I have a lutino hen, Holly, and a gray pied, Casey. Casey is a pet store bird that my friend gave me and I've been working with him to make him less scared, but he still doesn't like to be held or petted. Holly is a total love bug that thinks my younger daughter hung the moon and stars, lol. Wherever my daughter is, that's where she wants to be. She loves kisses, scratches, and cuddles. Charlie, my Goffins, is my first cockatoo, though I do have previous experience with them. She came to live with us about 2 months ago when she had to leave her family due to making one of the children have horrible asthma attacks. She's still adjusting to life here and she isn't the snuggliest, but she does love a good head scratch and she'll give kisses. She can be quite goofy at times too. She isn't really loud, but when it's her bedtime she WILL let you know. She'll also let us know if her dish is empty.

I'm always game for talking birds, so if you want to chat, let me know. It is St. Patricks day 2013. I have a macaw myself and two cockatoos. The reason that I am writing this is that I met an old man today that caught a macaw in his yard what he says is a few years ago. My neighbor introduced me to him because she said that a friend of hers has a macaw like mine that he needed to find a good home for. Took my macaw over there on March 16, 2013 to see if they might get along. Well it was not exactly a love connection or even an interest connection for the macaws. The thing is that my husband and I cannot entertain another large parrot if it cannot be a mate to the one that we have.

The macaw is big and beautiful and the man still has it. Don't want to tell you all the breed or the things that this bird says because we would like to help to find the owner if possible. I know what type of macaw it is. The poor macaw looks very active and healthy and comes with a cage. The problem is that the bird has no toys and is only being fed peanuts and walnuts.....I was very much wondering how the bird looked so healthy on this diet. The elderly man said that he could not care for the bird and that his wife could handle it but she was overseas. Anyway, we are wanting to help find a really good owner. The bird was a little nippy around us but my husband was finally able to rub its neck.

No breeders please. We are looking to find a home with a person who knows that big parrots are loud and messy and need someone with a lot of time and money for proper food and lots of toys. I wish that we had the time for this one because it is a real beauty. It will need some taming and it does bite as all large birds will with strangers around its cage. The bird will not be good with small children who could be hurt by a big parrot. Person must be willing to be patient and work with the bird.
Needs a lot of love and attention and person must not be on a tight budget. Only reply if you have or have had handling experience with large parrots.

Please reply and I will forward this post to the current owner. This man was willing to give the bird away to the right person. I think that there should be a small adoption fee like a couple of hundreds of dollars of new toys for the bird, and it might be better off in a slightly bigger cage. Bird only has one metal perch so I think the very least fee should be buying a couple of large branch type perches. Cookie is already around 4 or 5 yrs. old, a gray cockatie.. We got him about 2 yrs. ago when the owner died. Back then, Cookie got a partner but we don't know the story of them since Cookie just gave to us, but Cookie's partner died too when their owner died and we found it weird. So now, Cookie doesn't have a partner for two years so since his partner died, so we decided to buy a female cockatiel for him, which is Cooka, a pied cockatiel. We bought Cooka from a pet shop and asked the details like if its a female and how old Cooka is, and they said Cooka is about 12-13 months old.. At first, we placed Cooka in the same cage as Cookie's cage. As we observed, Cookie was hissing and trying to bite Cooka, but he can't bite Cooka since she was able to go away. As the days passed, Cookie still hiss and try to bite Cooka when she's near with him, but not most of the time, its just like Cookie's aggressiveness lessen as the days passed. We made a new cage, a larger one, so they would feel much comfortable and move widely. I also placed a nestbox for them. Cookie sometimes go inside the nestbox everyday but Cooka do often and sometimes, both of them are inside so I guess Cookie doesn't try to kill Cooka. We really want them to pair and mate up because we really love birds/pets and someday to train a cockatiel.

So, my problems/questions now are:
1. Should I separate them first?
2. Are there still any possibilities they would pair and eventually mate?
3. How long before they pair-up? and perhaps mate?
4. Should I get another male or female cockatiel?

Any infos/guides would be appreciated.. Thanks alot!

New to the Forum

Hello everyone. I have been looking for a reliable place to ask questions and learn from other bird owners, so here I am!! My boyfriend and I adopted a Goffin's Cockatoo last year named Molly. She came from an extremely neglectful home and was found abandoned in an empty house by two cleaning ladies. We are currently in the process of switching her diet over from a complete seed diet to a more fresh diet...but she is so hard to introduce to new food!!!
Molly plucks her feathers out, and only has a few sprouting from her tail and wings...but they come and go. I just bought a daily spray that is supposed to help stop her plucking, and she absolutely loves it.
I am here to learn as much as I can about giving my beautiful, and loving girl the absolute best. I want her to be healthy and happy.

Wanted to introduce myself and ask for some help

I am the very proud mommy of a baby African Grey named Charlie. My husband bought Charlie for me when our first son went off to school. I have worked with parrot rescues and breeders in the past so I knew exactly what I was getting into. However, we will be rescuing an additional parrot this weekend.
He/she is a 15 year old yellow collard macaw. He has completely plucked his chest and legs bare. The former owners thought it was because he was sad that one of their dogs had passed away. However, after speaking at length with them I found out his diet is strictly sunflower seeds. He only has one toy, because they said he doesn't like toys, and they moved him in front of a large window thinking he would be happier if he could see outside.
I would like any helpful tips any of you can share about getting him off of his sunflower seeds and onto a healthy diet. I cook for my baby, feed her organic human grade pellets, and she also eats anything and everything she can that we eat. I know what is good for them, but I have a feeling getting our new one off a straight sunflower seed diet will be a chore.
new to bc forum

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. Her parents had asked her to babysit him because they are building a new house, then her life was turned topsy turvey when her husband went for basic training, leaving her with 3 under the age of 4. She was concerned that she would forget to feed the poor little guy. So here he is.

I believe he is about 6 years old. He does have a band on his leg. So far only cheeps, she says he sings when the vacuum is running.

I have no idea if he came directly from a breeder or from a wholesaler/petstore. I wish I could figure out how to post a photo. I believe his colour would be considered green.

i just lost my best friend

I don`t even know why im here. I just lost my very best friend. she drowned in the toilet while i was at the store and im devistated. im holding her as i write this and i know shes gone... im just very sad, shes all i had. im divorced and my son is in afganistan. i feel really alone and responsible for her death
someone say something please. have you ever had a bird that ment the world to you?
ok,no one is talking, understandable i guess. i`ll give her obituary now..maybe that will help.
I never had an interest in birds until I saw.. or gleeper saw me in a local petco store. I was looking for ferret food and I wasnt paying attention but my wife,at the time, noticed that gleeper watched my every move and went to every corner of her cage trying to follow me. I don`t know if her breeder looked like me or had the same body language but when my wife urged me to go see her and the employee took her out of the cage, she did everything she could to get to me.... how could i resist. we have spent untold hours together since that day in january 2006. she has greeted me every single day since. i have fallen asleep listening to her grind her beak in comfort as we sat together and we have seen my son graduate basic training together. gleeper and i were inseperatable since we met. she will be cremated on dec31st and she will be with me until it is my time. I will have my ashes spread in her favorite place and she will be there with me. gleeper was my very best friend

Hello everybody I'm new here and can you help me?

Hi Everybody,
I wonder if one of your experts can help me. They have a breeding pair of Fisher love birds. There were four new babies, and one soul survivor of the the last clutch of four was out of the box and on his back on the bottom of the cage with blood on his head and both wings look injured. I thought he was dead or close to it.

So I decided to take him out of the cage and that's where it all began. He was alive, we found a box and some baby food, some water, a wash cloth for bedding and I told my friend "I don't want a bird, I have no idea what to do with a baby bird" He said, "I have to go to work and my parents wont be home for 3 days" basically if you don't take him hes not going to make it.

Then I looked in at this little guy, his mouth was wide open and I said "Oh My God I have a bird".

He made it through the night!! I got up several times to try and feed him. Eating wasn't a problem, right off the plate we think he was older than he looked.

After further examination I found his beak was crooked, his feet were a bit tweaked and his tail feathers were misshapen and he basically looked beat up.

So I called a friend and she had an extra cage and took the little guy home with a lifetime supply of baby egg mixture.

After a few days he seemed to be healing and no problem getting around his cage, my desk and the large window in my bedroom. He was eating plenty during the day and didn't seem to want food at night.

I later found out he was about 2 months old.

I was very concerned about him being cold since his feathers were not completely filled in so I kept him in a box at night under the towel. And I wanted him close to me so I could check on him during the night.

Well Charlie is almost a year now and if I don't keep his wings clipped he will fly, he poops on command, and takes showers with me.

And at night I say "Charlie are you ready for bed?" and I pick him up and put him on the edge of a small wicker basket and he crawls in and I close it down and say, "night Charlie" I know this is probably not right but hey Charlie doesn't have a normal bird life. I'm a comic and I take him with me quite a bit, all I have to say is "Charlie wanna go for a ride?" and he gets in his travel cage and were off.

Charlie can also be heard on the radio on Sunday nights in San Diego.

Anyway I wanted to share and thank you Bird Channel and all the beautiful birds and bird people helping, supporting and making bird ownership just that much more fun. Trying to find my way around the site and learn the things available here.

My name is Sara and my baby's name is Marco. course (funny story) when I first got her, the petstore owners son said..."Oh I think this one is definately a male it has a much flatter head... you see that? (pointing to Marco's head)" then course he adds, "Im almost never wrong, Ive been right almost 85% of the time" so really how could I go wrong with those figures? I was excited to have a babyboy! lol So we immediately named him marco and starting calling him that while he was growing up at the pet store. Needless to say they convinced me to have him sexed and 11 weeks later after calling him marco for that long the results came back she is a girl. No problem, we love her either way!

So yes :) Marco is now 1 year old she was born a few days before Christmas. She is so much fun. She has been quite the handful I will say that much. Not only do I have to clean her cage, but the walls and floors etc. I am greatful that the dogs do get much of it, but still she has been alot of work. But I wouldnt trade her for nothing.

She is just starting to vocalize alot. She only seems to really do it with just me in the house. I am her favored human. I record lots of it and post on youtube. There are probably 50 or more videos of her there. I would document every visit while she was growing up at the pet store until she made it home so theres lots. Infact there was so many we made her, her very own webpage :D

https://sites.google.com/site/marcosperch/ that is where everything is at.

Please feel free to stop by ... leave a comment on the guest page and enjoy! After CC died, I went to cockatiels. Ash was amazing but not hand friendly, Misty was shy, and Abby was a singing talkative joy who had just started warming up to me but he sadly just died a few days ago at only 3 years old

During all my tiels, I came across 2 european starlings who were the bes birds I had ever had. Sadly Clarice #1 broke her neck chasing a cricket under a box, and Clarice #2 drowned trying to take a bath in a fish tank (still unsure how she squirmed in there!)

The day after he died? Found a seagull with a broken wing! We just took him to the naturre center today.

And what else did today? Got a new bird which is where this new story starts.

I am now the proud companion of a 2 year old canary-winged parakeet named Emerald (Emma or Emmy for short)

She's shy right now, but so sweet and talkative! I love her little voice and her cute little chatters. She's already tamed and loves being with me. She even tried helping me open her berry pellets and helped me drink my smoothie

She is such a cutie and I can't wait till her personality comes out even more! When we told them we wanted her, I went to go pick out some new toys and treats for her while my dad waited for them to get her and all I hear is the girl calling EVERY person who worked there over to say bye to her! They've had her there for almost a year and I've wanted her ever since they got her!)

There's a couple pictures of her. But I have a new situation that I could use some advise on. I have three gcc living in one cage together. They all get along well and I have never seen them fight or not get along whatsoever. They were introduced to each other years apart. The oldest is ten, her name is Callie. She is a female and is ten years old. The next is Kona. He is a male and is two years old. The third is Kokua. Sex is not know but the age is just about a year. My question is that recently Callie and Kona have started mating. I purchased them a nesting box which they both took to with no reservations. The third bird, Kokua does not and has not even tried to enter the nesting box. The pair sleep in the box and poor Kokua now has to sleep alone. Before the three would cuddle up together at night. Should I remove Kokua from the cage and give Callie and Kona some "alone" time? This is my first time trying to breed. I've read quite a bit on line but any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Yours,

Seth

Hello World My Name is Samwise "Sam" Gamgee

I was 13 when I saw a Parrot at Busch Gardens in St. Louis and have wanted one my whole life. 36 years later and I got one or he has me. He has been in my flock for a month now and he is everything I believed he would be. He brings smiles to my wife and I every evening after work, no matter how bad the day was. Truly amazing creature and now friend.

Hey everyone

Hey Everyone

So my partner and I are in Australia and we have just welcomed to our growing pet family a peachfaced lovebird. We will be adding a second one shortly from the same breeder once it is ready. We have never owned lovebirds before so very much looking forward to the experience.

These join our family of 2 dogs, 1 cat and 5 chickens!
