He is young Hatch date of 07/29/2010(turning a year this month). I figured with him being your he would be able to adapt quickly to wearing a harness/leash.
Lets face it, it is in no way natural for birds to be wearing a harness/flight suit. Butters my RFM hates them, he acts as if I am trying to kill him when I am attempting to put it on. Althought I can, he fights it like a wing clipping. His wings ARE clipped but I still have fears of him fluttering off and I dont want to loose my little buddie. Not to mention, struggling to put on a flight harness isnt helping our relationship either.

Are there any alternatives to the flight harness/aviator suit/ or flight suit. He just hates having these things wrap around his body and I hate fighting him to do so. I know in the past there were "leg leashes" but I havent see any sold in years.

I was also looking for what the other members on here do. Do you take your Bird outside with you? Are they just clipped? Do they wear a harness/leash/flight suit? Thanks Guys and Girls. -Dave

flight cages

I am giving every one else a chance to rant or rave.
What do you think are the best flight cages, and why. I am looking for some thing about 30L x 24W x 35H. and bar spacing for a small parrot. It can be bigger, but must be able to be moved from room to room. I want a big access door since I am fatter and creakier and cant get in there to clean as I used to "cough cough" number of pounds and years ago.

Another bird store to avoid

I went to Everything Birds to buy food bowl packages and the main problem was their costumer service. they email me first saying that my order was processing and will send me a tracking number when it ships. When I product shipped I was never notified and I had to email them to be given a tracking number two days after my order had shipped. Around the same time I check my bank account and notice that the charge for my order completely disappeared. When I received my order I checked again my account and there was no charge for my order. I had to email the company again to find out what is going on and still have not received a reply but the charge finally appeared on my account and it left me pretty angry. Again no reply from the company yet. And when your browsing online avoid Everything Birds at www.bird-cage.com, should not happen to no one.

Birdtricks.com

Has anyone tried the videos from Bird Tricks? These are suppose to be the best but for those out there in the real world that just can't afford one but still need something better than a small bird cage for large birds, all you need is to buy those simple small animal or large dog carriers, drill holes on the sides of it to screw on perches of your choice (I put sandpapered manzanita in Ruby's carrier). Since Ruby is concered a med-large parrot, his carrier is pretty small to put food and water bowls in it but if you have a macaw of larger, the carrier should be large enough to put these estenial items in and still be roomy and comfortable for your parrot.

I'm going to take pictures of Ruby's carrier to show the details.

Poop off?

Wondering if anyone has any comments or opinions about the poop off products?

(not so) Marvelous Pet Supplies

I purchased a cage from them because I liked the innovative ideas they came up with (easy to put together/clean, bowls that are integrated into the door so they cannot be removed by the parrot (only through the feeder doors), etc).
The cage I received had dings and dents and scratches and scraped chipping paint (try to clean it more than once and see how fast it rusts!) missing parts, missing welds, poor welds, and rust (light and heavy). After a month and much pulling of teeth, the manufacturer finally agreed to replace it..and the replacement was in worse shape. So this is not a fluke unfortunately, but a glimpse into the quality of these products. But finally, my diligence has been rewarded. Last week I FOUND IT--HALLELUJAH!!!

The Golden Cockatoo is selling playstands, gyms, perches, toys and pieces of bottlebrush. Their website is <a href="www.goldencockatoo.com" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">www.goldencockatoo.com. When I saw the products on their website looked identical to Wayne's, I corresponded with the president, Richard Horvitz. It turns out The Golden Cockatoo is now the sole distributor of Wayne's parrot stuff; Wayne's sticking to building now.

I don't know if anyone else has been searching, but bottlebrush is by far the best product I've come across for play stands and gyms, and no one else seems to use it. My macaw adores his "Wayne's Parrot Stuff" play stand and hanging gym, both made of bottlebrush. The wood is just fabulous for chewing

Hope anyone who wants bottlebrush or "Wayne's stuff" finds this post. If you're considering purchasing a stand or gym, Brady and I say, "Go for it!" (No, we don't get anything for this endorsement--darn it!)

Nancy

air purifier

I have had a Flair air purifier in my bird room for about 7 yrs. After pretty much finding the 2 that I've taken out of the package in pieces on the floor I just figured it was something else he didn't like. Then this morning i took a closer look at the packaging, everything was fine with the seal etc. but looking at the back there was part of the label that had had somehting glued over the rest. Carefully pulling the glued on label off I found a different experation date from the piece that had been glued over it. The date that was showing when I bought the package said "best if used by 12/30/13" on the label that was actually printed with the packaging and under the glued on piece it give a "best if used by 09/07/04".

I've been totally disgusted to think I have been trying to give these things to my bird and they appear to be about 6 years out of date. I've contacted the company and have not recieved any answer to a short inquiry (they only allow for 200 characters). From now on I WILL NOT be buying anything from F.M. Brown's Sons Inc. Sinking Spring, PA. But a cage isn't worth $.01 if it's a danger to my bird.

I just want to share a very bad experience I had with Bird.com and explain why they've lost my business permanently. I'd also like to caution others regarding this business's so-called 'experts'.

Recently I had a trip out of town I had to plan for, and I was going to have to leave my senegal at my brother's house. I needed to purchase a large cage that was portable, as Taka's current cage is decidedly NOT.

After asking for advice and shopping around, I found a cage on Bird.com that was suitable, and well-priced. The bar dimensions were acceptable for a senegal, and after examining the picture I could see no reason why this cage wouldn't be fine. The Bird.com operator said the cage was suitable for conures up to macaws. Senegals are widely said to require the same cage dimensions as an average size conure (some conures being larger, some smaller, tail length not-wthstanding).

WHAT A MISTAKE!

The first cage that came had a manufacturing defect that made it impossible to put together. As it came 2 days before I was scheduled to leave town, I was about frantic. I called bird.com and they agreed to send another. Well the second cage came and I put it together to make sure it worked this time and discovered that the top door of the cage has enormous gaps, gaps just big enough for a senegal to stick his head through and get stuck. This cage would be fine for a much larger bird, but conures and senegals? NO. I certainly was not going to take any risk with my bird, and the risk was obvious.

So, it being too late to buy another cage, I ended up boarding Taka at the last minute.

When I returned from my trip I set about trying to return the cage. They said they would take it back but I'd have to pay shipping. I explained that the description of the cage described it as being suitable for my size bird when it is NOT. The manager I spoke with said she would go speak to her "bird expert' and see what he said, but if he said the cage was fine then I was responsible for shipping.

She returned to tell me that her 'expert' claimed a senegal is too small for the cage but that the cage was described as suitable for conures, not senegals! Senegals, he claimed, are smaller.

Gosh, that's news to me. My senegal is definitely bigger than a cherry-headed conure. Not to mention the gaps in the door of the cage wouldn't be suitable for any size conure I have seen. They're just begging to have a bird stick his head through and be strangled. That's not a risk I am willing to take, how about any of you?

So, she assured me that since the cage was fine for conures, but I didn't have a conure, the insuitability of the cage was not their problem, and I would have to pay to return the cage. I assured her that I would share my experience with bird.com.

What disgusts me most of all is the incompetence of the staff and alleged experts who work for Bird.com. If you're going to claim a cage is suitable for a bird as small as a conure, you can't exclude a bird who is the same size as a medium sized conure. They repeatedly made the claim both that the cage was 'perfectly fine' and that a senegal is not as big as a conure. Forget their refusal to take responsibility for the cage. They refused to alter the cage description or even admit the cage is not suitable for the birds they claim it is for.
I'm thankful I am not stupid enough to have just blindly believed them. I certainly am not going to trust my bird to the products they sell on their website again.
Exciting news!

So I'm very excited to say that I may be getting a very good job soon (landed an interview for sometime in the next 2 weeks!) which means that I will be able to get Goonie's new cage much sooner then I had planned. It costs 10.00 Which i got back in a month of shopping.

It is a groups of Bird vendors that once you are a member you shop at these places and enter the code in the coupon box and you get anywhere fro m10% off to 15 or 20% off.

I shop at these shops regularly anyway so to get these savings added is a huge help with money being tight
Even better each month every purchase you enter your info on a form for every order and you get a entry to win a 50.00 shopping trip. Also recommend shops to join and get a gift certificate I forget how much I think 20.00
Oh and they have great contests We just had a Turkey Hunt.

Anyone interested check it out i recommend it to all my new mommies who get birds from me because well who is not wanting to save some money now days

<a href="http://www.avianadvantage.com/" target=_"blank" class="SmlLinks">http://www.avianadvantage.com/

April

Got my Bird Paradise order

I received my full-spectrum lighting floor lamp from Bird Paradise yesterday. I went home after work and set it up on a timer, from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
At first, Zeno didn't really know what to think. It's really bright, much brighter than what he was used to. He sits on his rope perch pretty close to the light. When it came on this morning, he was OK with it. It's still too soon to tell if it will make a difference in his temperament.

I also got the Bird Sitter DVD. I really enjoy watching it! such pretty birds! But it is LOUD! I think Zeno will have to get used to hearing all the loud birds, and I hope it doesn't make him louder! I'm hoping the DVD helps entertain him when I'm gone.

The bird trainer in the DVD says watching the DVD will make your fid more self-confident. I just hope it makes him happier. newquakermama

Product Recommendations

Just looking for product recommendations for a reference point, so any input would be greatly appreciated!

Air Purifier - (many people often wonder what some good brands are)
JWR Exotic Bird Air System
Honeywell HEPA
RabbitAir

Air Purification Systems

Humidifier - (perhaps ones that are easy to clean and don't grow algea?)

Heaters - (gas or electrical - for humans and birds)
Avi-Temp Infrared Heat Panels

Full Spectrum Lights - (safe recommendations for our avians)
FeatherBrite
Spectrabird

Parrots and the Benefits of Full Spectrum Lighting
Full Spectrum Light for Birds, Vita-Lite, FeatherBrite, and ZooMed AvainSun.

Vacuums - (I'm sure there are several bird owners who end up killing their vacs due to large pieces of food or nuts! Gotta bring out the heavy duty stuff!)
Dyson Animal Vac (DC 17) - It will willingly suck up tiel flight feathers, millet sprays and does a good job on both carpet and hard wood floors. It is bagless and will also clean the dust from the exhaust too with it's hepa filter. Keep in mind, this is from an owner whos largest bird is an Indian Ringneck.
Eueka Boss - I went through several vacuums before I got it. My largest bird is a conure BUT my smallest bird, a lovebird hen, daily produces massive quantities of shredded paper that turn up everywhere, practically coat the carpet, and clog every other vacuum I tried. And the canary eats by putting his head in the dish, shaking his head, & throwing 2/3 of every dishful of seed on the floor. Not being the best housekeepeer--actually, being one of the worst -- seed tends to accumulated on the floor behind his cage/under the stand & behind the drapes. By the time I'd get to vacuuming for real, there is a fair amount there. I did a Consumer Report search, & the Eueka Boss came up as a Best Buy. I got mine at Costco for under $150 & it is without a doubt the BEST vacuum I have ever had. It has a built in hose attachement & you can switch from floor to hose to floor with just the turn of a button, without even bending down. And based on how quickly it fills a bag, it is cleaning my carpets WAY better than any of my previous machines.

Mops - (a messy cotton mophead isn't necessarily ideal for cleaning up a parrots mess!)

Cage Cleaning 'Tricks' - (you know, products that make cleaning the cage easier, such as maybe poop off, or a steam cleaner, perhaps?)
Shark Steam Cleaner
Eureka 370 Enviro Multi Steamer - It is great on cages and bathrooms, it is a little clunky for floors, but I've owned mine since about 2000.

Supplements - (out of the ordinary, but nevertheless, beneficial supplements that can be added to their diet up to 4 times a month to 'cover all bases')
Red Palm Oil - betacarotenes; vitamin A; vitamin E; co-enzyme Q10 (antioxident)
Cod Liver Oil - Vitamin D
Coconut Oil - EFAs
Organic Wildflower Pollen
Calciboost

AViX Results - Actions Speak Louder Than Words
Clinical Results WITH SELECTED COMPLEMENTARY THERAPIES IN BIRDS

Gram Scale - (great for weighing our birds to ensure health!)

WEIGH YOUR BIRD REGULARLY!!

Feel free to suggest another "topic" so we can get everything covered! He is adjusting to life with us so well, it's actually incredible. I wanted a Manzanita play gym for max but think they are not that attractive and expensive, so I decided to build one myself. I am a cabinet maker in San Diego and it is quite easy for me to duplicate this in different door styles and colors. Personally, I think its a great idea and have not found anything like it, yet, on the web. Please tell me what you folks think about it and if it might be something to start marketing. Thanks for your help. The dimensions of this one is 5ft high-32 inches wide- 21 1/4 deep , the cabinet is on rollers with ample room inside. The doors are a black rubbed through with dark wood stain underneath.

Dehydrators?

Im looking for inputs on food Dehydrators. Anyone own or been able to compare the offerings from Featherland, A&E, or Avian Adventures other than just from the pictures on the web ? The only brand iv'e seen in person is Featherland. It's nice but it has more large frame like bars to make folding possible as well as using them to "frame" small "panels" of the cage wire that it's rather unsightly overall for my taste. If the build quality of the other manf. is recommended I will prob. go that route for the uncluttered view for my sweetheart during our time apart a.k.a work. I have 3-4 months till a new arrival ( sitting on eggs now) for 1 cage and the second is an upgrade for my mate. At approx. 1k+ ea. i don't wish to make a bad choice reg. the selection ! Thanks in advance...

Are you a Bird Kabob fan?

FYI: If you’re a fan of the Bird Kabob (my birds love them!), there’s a special offer on www.perchfactory.com.

I almost lost him...

I almost lost my sun conure Teq last week. We had such nice weather, so I thought I'd take him out in his travel cage and sit on the back deck a while. I put him in his cage, opened the door to go outside, picked up his cage -- and it fell apart, right on top of him! It's amazing he wasn't hurt. Then he flew out the door in a panic. I called to him, and he turned around and tried to land on my hand, missed, flew away, then tried again and made the landing on my finger. Whew! I know how close I came to losing him. Most birds don't find their way back.

The cage is a good cage, but it's designed for easy take-down and storage - no screws, etc. It's very sturdy, looks great, and is just the right size for a weekend trip - although it's a little heavy for moving around a lot. I'll probably put it back together again and use it for weekend travel, but I'll never transport him in it again.

Can anyone recommend a lightweight travel cage? Are those backpacks good? I want something he can see out of...

Can someone explain and maybe give links to the different types of toys

I know there is destructible, what are the other ones.

In my cage right now I have tons of toys for it to rip up like blocks and rope toys... but what else is there???
