I have decided that I am going to breed certain parrot species later in my life. I'm going to start after I graduate with a bachelor's in Wildlife Conservation and Ornithology. I going to try to breed some rare species for their presurvation of their gene pool but there are also some that are not endanger species but I hard to find in the pet trade. I though Hawk Heads would be nice to breed since I got Malachite but I'm not going to breed him. Really, I would like to breed Golden Conure, Mealy Amazon, Great Green Macaw, and would love to breed Hyacinth Macaws and Palm Cockatoos but who knows how many species I will decide.

Hey All!

My name is Kimi. I am a long time bird owner/lover but a brand new member to this forum. I'm looking for some advice:

I want to start a breeding business, as a hobby, out of my home. I currently breed parakeets and conures but just give them away (or keep them) and since I love doing it I thought it would be great to make a business out of it.

Does anyone know the requirements for breeding and selling in California? What permits (if any) and licenses do I need to acquire? How do I register as a business and what are the general costs?

Any advice would be extremely helpful! I love birds and want to put my hobby to good use.

Arizona Bird Breeding Laws

I was just wondering if the state of Arizona requires a person who sells birds to carry some form of a license? I checked the Department of Agriculture and found nothing that stated a bird breeders license requirement. I was hoping someone would have more information and hopefully more clearly than the department of agriculture. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Well I have notice that a lot of so called breeders and those that sell parrots are selling large Congo African Greys at a higher prices than a med-size Congo African Greys because they are claiming that the Congo is a Cameroon African Grey and are more "rare" and "hard to find". If any logical thinking person would do before purchasing an extremely expensive exotic creature would do their research before make that decision. This is false advertising and it really upsets me that these people would give false information about a parrot's species. I know that their are only two subspecies in African Greys which are the Congo and the Timneh. Congo has the red tail, black beak and the Timneh's tail is not so red with a horn beak. I guess they trick people in thinking that the larger Greys are called Cameroon but that is the thing. Cameroon are that same Greys as the Congos, the only differences is that the large Congo greys come from the regin of Cameroon Africa and Congos from Congo Africa. They are the same specis just size differences.

Enough about me ranting. What I'm getting at is if you plan on purchasing an African Grey do not buy one that is overpriced because they are claiming it being a Cameroon or Ghana African Grey, question them on their knowledge. If anyone know how to correct this problem, I am open to suggestion. It is not right.

My bf suggested to go to the Federal Trade Commission but he's not sure what say they have when it comes to animals.

And another thing I ask of my fellow Parrot Family Community is pass the word around because this is not the only species that has been mislabeled...Has anyone heard of a African Military Macaw?

Birds & Reptiles Now Illegal To Sell In New Mexico

Hello everyone.

It's been a while since I have posted here so some may not know me. My name is Anna and I am with Macaw & Cockatoo Rescue of New Mexico. I thought the following might interest you and felt it was important to share.

I just wanted to put it out there that there are a few scary things happening here in New Mexico related to pet birds and reptiles. Our Dept. of Fish & Game has mandated that it is now illegal to sell caged birds and reptiles at pet stores in the state of New Mexico, with the exception of budgies. I have visited a number of pet stores throughout the state over the past few weeks and all have notices posted stating the new law. Parrots that were shipped to stores prior to the inforcement of this new law are sitting in those stores, now waiting in limbo because they cannot be sold. Of course, we have offered our services but with major chains it is likely that the animals will simply be shipped to another store in other states. I did some research to try to find an article or anything that might explain these events to post here, but was surprised that I could not find one. I got a phonecall from the president of one of the bird clubs this morning and she thought the next phase of this project was to mandate that certain species be entirely illegal to own including quakers, most species of cockatoo, lovebirds, cockatiels (of all things), and some others. Other species not banned will require a permit. This is not in effect yet, just talk. I'm not sure how on earth they could inforce this and when I called my vet this morning to see if she had any information, she assured me that she would never turn me in for bringing her an illegal animal. That being said, I will likely be able to continue on doing what I love. Sadly, I feel that this is the beginning of the end for peaceful parrot ownership. I do not have time right at the moment to deeply research this. If anyone else has time and would like to research this situation, please let us know what you find. Unfortunately this is something that came out of nowhere as no one in our animal groups even knew it was coming until signs started showing up in pet stores that exotic pets would be no more. These stores seem to removing not only those animals for sale but also any supplies and items needed to care for them. I purchased over a dozon acrylic bird toys from one store for only a few dollars per toy. They were desperate to get rid of everything right away to make room for a new boarding section for dogs and cats. Anyway, don't want to alarm anyone, but feel it is important for bird owners to know what is going on.

Networking My Business

Here is the problem. I paint and draw and wood burn and make clocks with different kinds of Parrots on them or other animals if asked too. I also paint on Glass, and paint Mailboxes. I can paint on Anything that takes paint. However here is the problem. I am having issues with networking and getting my name out there again. I lived in NC at one point in my life but now I live in VA and it seems to be more difficult to network that before.

I took down my website because it was overhead that I didn't need at the time. Well I am ready to get back in the game and start peddling my goods again and would love advice on where to start. Craft shows are good but I specialize in Parrots mostly, so I want to get back into that world and specializing in one area can be a harder area that painting just anything.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

New Retail Business

I am currently a full time student and have had trouble finding a local job with flexible hours. I've decided to open a bird supplies business. It will be strictly online for now. I'm starting on eBay since I had a book business on there for a while in order to get rid of some used, unwanted books. I did rather well with that. I've already applied for my business license and resale permit.

What I want to know is: is there anything in particular that you shop for online (I know what I shop for, but I only have 1 bird)? Is there something you'd like to see more often online?

If it is successful, maybe one day I can open up a store. :)

Starting a home-based business

I have been raising baby cockatiels and canaries for about 2 years (only 1 breeder pair of each) in addition to quite a collection of larger pet birds. I have been thinking for some time of establishing a small home-based cockatiel and canary breeding business. I just love those babies! Have recently finished handfeeding another clutch. :) It would be nice to be able to deduct some of the expenses of breeding. However, I am concerned about the government restrictions and how to go about establishing a business. I live in Missouri. Any suggestions and advice would be much appreciated.

Breeding/Raising Sun Conures

Alright, truth be told I haven't been looking long, but I have been looking hard. As advised by people on this forum, I am searching for a green cheek conure breeder so I can get a pet quality GCC. I've had a terrible time even finding one who breeds these birds, much less this time of year. I know it's not really the right season. But if I can't get one now, I want to get in touch with a breeder so that when the eggs are laid, I can be informed and ready.

SO I realize it may be necessary to spend the money to have a baby shipped, if I want to be very picky about the breeder. But first I want to try to find someone in Central Florida. I am in the Tampa Bay area, local to Lakeland, Tampa, St Pete, Brandon...semi-close to Orlando and it's environs.

If anyone knows any reputable breeders in this area, or any /superb/ breeders across the country, I vastly prefer recommendations to randomly selecting someone who looks good.
I want all the good stuff-- well socialized hand fed babies who have been abundance weaned and handled a great deal.

Please help! Any advice welcome.

Pet sitter

Hello everyone I am really enjoying the forums, the only bad thing is there is many places to look I don't think it is that easy to navigate.

So I am new to the formus and I am new to the Houston Texas Area, I have started my own Pet Sitting Service for a couple of reasons. I love working with animals and once you have you can never go back to working in an office. I have experience with birds (mostly Macaws/greys/amazons)from my previous job. Also I needed a pet sitter for my bird and had a very hard time finding someone qualified to do it. So I thought I would give it a try and start my own business. I still get to work with animals and have a flexible schedule. So far things are going well. I have been a bird owner for most of my life but today something happened that I have never and to deal with before my female cockatiel has a wing blood feather that is just hanging their. This morning it was bleeding but as seemed to stop. She keeps pulling at it and has taken a bath and has flown around her room today trying to get it out should I leave it or help her out if I should help her what should I do?

Hello,

I am wanting to become a trainer for domestic birds. I have searched the internet for information, schools, classes etc. I can not find any type of certification, except for dog obedience.

Does anyone know the best way to go about learning about birds and how to train them and help them overcome their behavioral issues.

Does anyone know the name of a bird trainer that I could get in contact with to possibly apprentice with?

Where is the best place to go to learn about birds, their biology and behavior?

I know I am asking a lot, but there is absolutely nothing available.

Cockatiel Problems

I have had Mattie (white face) since March of this year (she is 10 months old). She was the cutest little baby bird ever and I fell in love with her right way. She had the biggest feet I had ever seen and I thought to myself man this bird is going to be huge. I had never had a baby, baby bird before and so I didn't know exactly what to expect. I have another Cockatiel, Stevie, who was older when I adopted him from the pet store.

I soon noticed that Mattie was just taking a really long time to develop. She was flying backwards and she couldn't figure out how to perch or even walk sometimes. And she always bobbed her head up and down. It was kind of shaky. I thought nothing of it---just figured that being so young she would grow out of it. Then about a month after having her she developed a horrible respitory problem. I took her to the vet right away and spent the next couple weeks hand feeding her to get her weight back up and her feeling better. My vet loved her and thought she was the cutest little thing ever. She also noticed Mattie's lack of development---and told me that sometimes breeders hatch babies out of eggs when the babies can't figure it out on their own. And that in nature survival of the fittest would of taken over and these birds would of never hatched.

Lots of information to get to my question. Mattie is still having trouble perching---she can do it but it takes her forever how to figure out how to climb up on to the perch or the side of the cage. She recently (after working with her forever) figured out what step up means. Eventually she figured out how to fly forwards---or at least attempt to fly. Her tail feathers are always broken because she tries so hard to fly and ends up landing on top of them breaking them. And her feet are still huge. In fact they are way too big for her body. She is the sweetest little bird in the world. She is her mama's baby and loves to cuddle. She let's me hold her like a baby---but I just worry about her. Is there anyone who has come across something like this---and is there anything I can do to help her become all that she can be?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention one thing. Stevie tolerates her--but I think that because she is slow doesn't have much to do with her. What can I do to make them closer?
