I have a two year old female and a two year old male that started mating a week ago so i put a nestbox on the cage. i have a cuddle bone, two calcium blocks, good seed, a lot of toys, perches, and two other birds in the cage. they are hand raised babies, and don't really payattention to rhetorically pair. its a four by three foot cage. The cocky is taking wonderful care of her, i marked the egg with a pencil(don't worry i didn't break it)and she has been sitting on it. Please let me know if i forgot anything, ask me questions, and tell me if Im doing it right.

HaHa all my neighbors call me bird girl and come to me for all their bird questions. ok, this is the third time I've tried posting this, and have had to rewrite it 3 times. By the way i dusted their seed with lafebers bird formula.

Help! Father bourke trying to mate with baby

The bourkes babies came out of the nest last night...exciting! The father bourke has been trying to mate again with the female but she usually gives him the beak. So the hormones are back on! And tonight he went up real close to the baby and then he mounted him/her! The poor little one was crying and being squashed. These babies still need to be in the same cage because they are fed only by the parents for another week, they can't take care of themselves. It is mostly the father bourke that teaches them to eat, ect. What do I do? Any advice? I have a part-time job so I can't be with them 24/7 and I'm really worried he'll kill the poor baby. Thx.

Sun Green Cheek baby born!

2 baby Sun/Green cheek conure born! The parents are very dedicated except they don't clean out the poop from the box. I have been trying to clean it up and (as gross as this may sound), I've found the best method is to take it out with my hands. But every time I put my hand in the box the babies scream very loud and it upsets the parents. I was hoping to begin holding them to get them hand tame but I'm nervous because of their loud screams. Would any of you recommend that I just ignore their yells and pick them up? Or would you recommend that I just leave them alone. I really want them to be hand tame but I don't want to stress the babies or parents. Thx!

Canary breeding issue

Hi all,

It's the breeding season in my region, it's my first time, I am facing problem with the hen as she is not nesting.

the cock canary and the hen canary are separated, they hardly can see each other. The cock canary is singing laud for her and the hen is jumping right to left, up and down in her cage, i guess this is like a kind of positive response, it's like if they are both having a conversation.
so now I kept some nesting material today, shredder papers, cotton and the nest cup hanged.

The hen is not doing anything with the materials, she inspected them and inspected the nest cup, but still jump around whenever the cock sing for her.

My questions are: 1- is it early to see such a stage as i've just got the hen 3 days ago?
2- it's hard to find wooden nest materiel where i live, is the nest material of shredder papers and cotton is enough or do I need to find out something else, what idea can i try?
3- will placing the cock canary in the breeding cage "with a divider" helps to push the hen canary to make a nest?

Thank you for taking the time to read through my concern.

Canary breeding

Ive a pair of consorts. Everything is going well except she hasn't pooped since yesterday and her area near the vent looks a more puffy, but clean. She comes out of the nest box to eat and the male is always feeding her. She had been pooping outside of the nest about 3-4 times per day. The reason I know it's not her poop at the bottom of the cage is because hers are very, very large. The males is small and normal.
I always make available cucumbers, peas, carrots and lettuce, but they have only been eating seeds since she's been on the eggs. I put in some apple slices today thinking that the extra fiber can help if she is constipated. Can anyone help out and let me know if I should be concerned? He was such a horn dog that it was clear to one and all that he was male. (We always called Gussy, our first QP, a male, but I suspect he may well have been she)
So Ducky( QP) and Eepie ( lovie) were sexed as female and I was not happy about that. I do NOT want a broody hen in my little flock of two.
at 3? and 2? they have only asked to be fed by each other and the feeder insists upon being fed too. So there is a bit of confusion and upset behavior between them. But I have not seen any really female mating behavior in Ducky at all, and only very little ( VERY little) in Eepie.
I think a lot has to do with the lack of warm mush sort of food, no hidy holes to get into ( tents, cups, etc are No Nos) I also change their toys often and their cages are moved about the house from time to time. Because their cages are about the same size, but not shape, I even switch cages on them.
I've always done these things with my female birds and never had or seldom had any nest behavior. Phew.
What experiences have others had?

A question about Lovebird genetics....

I plan on getting a Lovebird someday hopefully in the summer! I want to get a weaned baby female Lutino peach faced lovebird get her attached to me and then after about a year Or so after I have had her I would love to try breeding birds for the first time. I would then plan to get a hand fed 1 year old normal male peach faced lovebird I would wait about 2 months maybe intill I would bring the two together so I can get close with the new one. I know all my info on breeding and handfeeding and all that and still have a long time to learn more about it but, I if I were to breed a female Lutino peach faced lovebird with a normal male peach faced lovebird that would mean that all the babies would be of the normal type but would also have a Lutino gene in them right? SO, Is it guaranteed that all chicks coming from these birds would all have the normal coloration? It dosnt really matter but Im just so confused on the whole thing. To get lutino offspring that would mean I would have to get a lutino split male right? If that was to happen then would the off spring be both of the normal type and the Lutino mutation? Is this weird for a bird this age?

Well, there is a nest box in Weasley & Jacob's Cage

My Mom & Dad got me a nest box for Xmas, so I moved Hermione and Bella into another cage and stuck the box in with Weasy and Jacob.
I'll let everyone know when and if they lay eggs.

hand rearing methods

what is the most popular way of hand feeding birds?
first baby budgie hatched!

Omigosh guys! First Diamond Dove Chicks Died, Now More on Way
Our pair of diamond doves recently had its first pair of chicks. Sadly, this has not been the happy experience one might expect. The first chick hatched several days earlier than its sibling, and the smaller scrawny latecomer was largely ignored by the parents. When it became clear that it was no longer even asking its parents for food, we decided to hand feed it with Exact Hand Feeding Formula and returned it to the nest. About an hour later, when we thought of perhaps giving it another feeding, we discovered it either pushed or fallen from the nest and dead.

The surviving chick appeared to be thriving well enough in the week or so that followed, even toddling around outside the cage with its parents, pecking along with them at a millet seed strand we had laid out in a sunny spot of the floor that they favored. It still harried its parents for feedings, but they began largely ignoring it. When we tried hand feeding it, it was clearly not interested at all in what we had to offer, but still continued approaching its ignoring parents for feedings for a time. Eventually it grew noticeably ever weaker and we tried hand feeding it more often, with little real success. One morning it was so weak that it appeared nearly dead in the cage. We hand fed it with more urgency, using a small syringe, and it seemed to recover somewhat after these basically forced feedings. At least it was able to stand. More frequent almost hourly feeding attempts did not really help matters in the long run though, as it continued to decline in general vigor until it too died.

Since we now have a new egg in the nest, with perhaps a second on the way, and are eager to do what we can to avoid a recurrence of the recent sad events, we hope that we can rely on the collective wisdom of these forums to help us avoid further tragedies.

We found a web page about finches called "Failure to Thrive" at http://www.ladygouldianfinch.com/features_failurethrive.php, and wonder if any of the problems described there might apply to our diamond doves. According to the page, the most common cause for chick deaths is bacteria, which is said to be treatable through the adults with something called Tetratex. Is this advisable as prophylactic measure? The thing is, our stronger chick seemed clearly eager to be fed by its parents, but all but refused hand feedings from us. Does this sound at all likely for a wasting away caused bacterial infection?

Sorry for this overlong posting from a newbie, but we look forward gratefully to any and all good advice that more seasoned bird folks may care to offer.

Tanya in Woodbridge, Virginia

Parakeets are not entering there nesting box.

My parakeets well not enter the nesting box i gave them.
